What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a procedure that removes the top layers of your skin; removing dead skin cells, peach fuzz, and fine wrinkles. Leaving your skin soft, refreshed, and glowing.
The cost to have a dermaplaning session done with an esthetician can be anywhere from $80-$280. However, dermaplaning can easily be done at home for about $5-$85 depending on the cost of the blade that you use.
*Before dermaplaning yourself I would consult with your esthetician/dermatologist beforehand. To ensure that you don’t have any skin issues and/or skin type that will be aggravated by the procedure.
How It Works
How Dermaplaning works is by taking a sterile blade and dragging it slowly at a 45-degree angle across your skin. By doing this, the blade removes dead skin cells, clogged pores, and other debris that has accumulated on your skin. After that, newer skin cells appear. Leaving your skin feeling very smooth!
Side Effects And Risks
A few normal side effects after dermaplaning are:
- Breakouts
- Skin irritation
- Dry skin
It’s important to note that if you have psoriasis, eczema, or active acne you should not do dermaplaning.
I have sensitive skin, so my face does get a little pink after. But it goes away by the next day. I also try to avoid products that can irritate my skin more, like retinoids.
The Process
I first wash my hands and clean my face with a daily cleanser (I use Youth To the People Superfood Antioxidant Cleanser or their Superberry Cleansing Balm) and then use micellar water with cotton pads to ensure that I get all the dirt and makeup off my face. Then I make sure my skin is completely dry before beginning. Once my skin is prepped, I then take the blade in one hand and with my other hand press down on my skin to keep it taut, moving the blade in an upwards direction at a 45 degree angle. Once I’m finished I use an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) + BHA (beta hydroxy acid) solution, this helps prevent any breakouts since you’re opening up your pores. Afterwards, I follow up with my daily serums and moisturizer.
If you’re going to be in the sun, it’s important to apply sunscreen since you’re exposing newly exfoliated skin.

- No. Your facial hair is vellus hair also known as peach fuzz. The only thing that can affect hair growth are hormonal changes and/or hormonal conditions.
- How often can you dermaplane?
- Every 3-4 weeks
- I’ve done it before but broke out, how do you prevent breakouts?
- Don’t dermaplane if you have an active breakout. Ensure that you’re using a clean technique and don’t use the same blade again, if you do make sure to clean it with alcohol. Use an AHA + BHA solution after and avoid wearing makeup for 24 hours.
